Credits/Backstory:

This was released on my “Bones ‘n’ Clones” album in 2001. Recorded and produced by Jim Chapdelaine and featuring Kriss Santala on harmony vocals, Jim on mandolin, Tracy Walton on upright bass, Jon Peckman on drums, and me, JV, strumin’ and singin’ fer you.
I’ve always loved the change of seasons in New England, and that’s colored many of my songs. When I wrote “New England” fifteen years ago, there was fairly regular progression of the four seasons. Listening to this song today makes me sad to realize how much that has changed.

Lyrics:

If you’re ever up in New England
stop by and see me sometime.

My big love came from Carolina
she blew north one crazy July
she loved me real hot ‘till the first morning frost
then she returned to the whispering pines

But if she’s ever back in New England
I know she’ll stop by and see me sometime
it’s not always cold in New England
and we’ll have a wonderful time
God always smiles on New England
so stop by and see us sometime.

I once knew a guy from Texas
just north of the old Rio Grande
he wore snake skin boots and threw up in my car
you know I’d sure love to see him again.

And if he’s ever up in New England
I hope he’ll stop by and see me sometime
it’s hardly ever cold in New England
and we’ll have a jim-dandy time
God always smiles on New England
so stop by and see us sometime.

Olde, olde New England not goin’ anywhere
Olde, olde New England, we’re happy to stay right here.

I’m writing my good friends a letter
they live out in San Diego
they say they like finding a new life
I sure wish they’d find their way home

And if they’re ever back in New England
I know they’ll stop by and see me sometime
it’s not always cold in New England
and we’ll have a heart-warming time
God always smiles on New England
so stop by and see us sometime
just take a left turn at Manhattan
and we’ll have a wonderful time.
